What is Rugged Computing?
A rugged computing is a computer specifically designed to reliably operate in harsh usage environments and conditions, such as
Drops and shocks
Strong vibrations
Extreme temperatures

Dust
Truly rugged computing devices are engineered, inside and out, to operate in a range of hostile environments. Their design encompasses the external housing, internal components, special coatings, and seals among others allowing them to function correctly in operating environments ranging from challenging to extreme.
Drop
The operator drops the computer from chest height (when holding the device in the crook of the arm) while collecting or processing data. (Free Drop)
Shock

The computer sustains unexpected force when mounted in a vehicle and that vehicle is involved in a collision or the computer is struck when in operation.

Application
They are designed from inception for the type of rough use typified by these conditions. Vehicle mounted environments (e.g. public safety vehicles or utility trucks) are well suited for rugged computing as the vibration and jolts inherent there would cause failures in typical portable computers. Rugged Tablet PC, Rugged Panel PC, Embedded Automation Controller and Marine Panel PC are made of magnesium alloy materials or aluminum made to be stronger than general Panel PC or plastic commercial laptops. Hard Disc Drives are shock mounted with foam or reinforcing material to withstand vibrations of daily use.
