Taiwan Convenience Store Chain: Multi-Temp Distribution with Winmate TC605

Barcode Scanning for Faster DC-to-Store Execution

Background

A major convenience store chain in Taiwan operates on a high-frequency, small-batch replenishment model with strict on-time delivery requirements. Daily operations involve a large number of SKUs and multiple delivery waves, spanning ambient, fresh food, chilled, and frozen categories. Distribution centers must deliver fast throughput while ensuring expiry/lot control, end-to-end traceability, and store handover accountability—minimizing out-of-stocks, mis-picks, and shrink.

To improve real-time execution and standardize frontline workflows, the chain implemented barcode-driven warehouse processes and deployed Winmate TC605 Rugged Handheld Computers as the primary scanning terminals across warehouse zones and outbound docks. Integrated with existing WMS/ERP and backend databases, the solution established a closed-loop workflow: receiving → put-away by temperature zone → picking → dock verification → roll cage loading → store handover and sign-off → traceability queries.

Main Challenges

  • Different operational tempos across temperature zones: Fresh/chilled/frozen items require tighter time windows and stricter handling steps, creating peak-time bottlenecks.
  • Complex roll cage / reusable tote circulation: Rapid circulation between DCs, line-haul, and stores can cause loss, misrouting, and low visibility without tracking.
  • Expiry and lot control pressure: Fresh and chilled goods are highly expiry-sensitive; lot traceability must be fast and reliable when required.
  • High cost of picking and shipping errors: Mis-picks, missed scans, or wrong temperature-zone loading directly impact store availability and returns/shrink.
  • Audit-ready store handover: Store receiving often happens within minutes; without verifiable handover evidence (sign-off/exception notes), disputes are common.
  • Harsh frontline environment with zero tolerance for downtime: Cold zones and dock operations increase the risk of drops/impacts and device failures.

Key Features

  1. Temperature-Zone Receiving and Put-Away (Ambient / Fresh / Chilled / Frozen)
    • TC605 scans cartons/items to complete receiving, quantity checks, and temperature-zone routing.
    • SOP prompts by zone (e.g., priority handling for fresh food, rapid move to cold storage) reduce operator variability.
  2. Expiry/Lot Binding to Enable FEFO/FIFO
    • During receiving or put-away, scans capture and bind lot and expiry data (per system fields).
    • Supports FEFO (First-Expire, First-Out) or FIFO and accelerates traceability: which lot, which location, which store, which delivery wave.
  3. Pick → Dock Verification → Roll Cage Loading: Scan-to-Prevent Errors
    • Pick scanning validates item and quantity to reduce mis-picks and omissions.
    • Dock verification ensures alignment of item/quantity/temperature zone/route before shipping.
    • Roll cage/tote IDs are scanned and bound to loading lists to establish a clear chain of accountability.
  4. Roll Cage / Reusable Tote Tracking for Better Asset Visibility
    • Track cage/tote events (outbound, store arrival, return pickup, DC return) for circulation transparency.
    • Generate exception lists (overdue returns, store dwell, missing assets) to reduce loss and replacement costs.
  5. Store Handover Sign-Off with Exception Notes (Audit-Ready)
    • Store receiving scans verify delivery contents and complete handover confirmation (e.g., e-signature/receipt confirmation/exception codes).
    • Shortage/damage/wrong-zone exceptions are recorded on-site and synced back to speed dispute resolution.
  6. Real-Time Sync with Offline Tolerance
    • Data is synced to WMS/servers in real time; TC605 can store records offline in weak-signal areas and auto-sync upon reconnection.

Why Winmate

  • Rugged reliability for high-intensity logistics: Reduces downtime risk in cold zones and dock operations with frequent impacts and drops.
  • Faster scanning, higher accuracy: “Scan-to-confirm” workflows reduce manual entry and prevent mis-picks and shipping errors.
  • One device across multiple zones: Supports end-to-end execution from receiving to store handover without switching tools or retraining.
  • Repeatable SOP deployment: Standard templates for multi-temp SOPs, cage/tote tracking, expiry/lot binding, and handover sign-off can scale across DCs and routes.

Conclusion

By deploying Winmate TC605 Rugged Handheld Computers, the convenience store chain upgraded multi-temperature warehouse operations from manual verification and delayed data entry to a real-time, scan-driven closed-loop workflow. The solution strengthened expiry/lot control to reduce shrink, improved roll cage/tote visibility, and created auditable store handover evidence—ultimately enhancing replenishment accuracy and supply chain resilience.
